‘09 TOUR season begins Thursday in Hawaii
Happy New Year, pros.
The 2009 PGA TOUR season gets underway Thursday when 33 event winners from 2008 tee it up at the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua’s Plantation course in Hawaii.
All but four of the 37 eligible will compete — Tiger Woods (still nursing the knee injury), Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington are all skipping the Hawaii stop at Kapalua Resort. And Vijay Singh, the defending FedEx Cup champion, will take a month off after the tournament to take care of some minor knee surgery. Garcia recently overtook Mickelson as No. 2 in the world in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Tee times begin at 3:45 U.S. Eastern time on the 7,400 yard Plantation course that makes use of natural elevation changes and the constant Kona winds. The competitors are:
Defending champion Daniel Chopra, Singh, Marc Turnesa, Will MacKenzie, Cameron Beckman, Dustin Johnson, Davis Love III, Greg Kraft, Zach Johnson, Steve Lowery, Parker McLachlin, Richard S. Johnson, Ryan Palmer, Johnson Wagner, Sean O’Hair, Adam Scott, Chez Reavie, J.B. Holmes, Brian Gay, Geoff Ogilvy, Boo Weekley, Ryuji Imada, Andres Romero, Carl Pettersson, D.J. Trahan, Trevor Immelman (Masters champ, the only major winner in the field), Stewart Cink, Ernie Els, Kenny Perry, Justin Leonard, K.J. Choi, Camilo Villegas and Anthony Kim.
